ARTIST STATEMENT

나는 늘 ‘어떻게 살아가야 하는가’라는 질문 속에서 작업을 이어간다. 고요한 순간마다 수많은 생각들이 스쳐 지나가고, 그 중 어떤 것은 깊게 파고들며 나를 붙잡고, 어떤 것은 흔적 없이 사라진다. 이러한 생각들은 때로 두려움이나 솔직함 같은 감정으로, 때로는 인간관계나 본질에 관한 질문으로 모습을 바꾼다.

그림은 나를 이 복잡한 흐름에서 잠시 비워내는 행위다. 캔버스 앞에서 몰두하는 동안 생각은 조용해지고, 대신 색과 형태가 나의 질문을 대신한다. 화면 속 인물들은 깊이 생각에 잠기거나, 한 가지에 몰두하여 외부의 방해를 받지 않는 존재로 나타난다. 그들은 나 자신이기도 하고, 스쳐간 누군가이기도 하다.

나는 인간의 내면과 관계, 그리고 그 사이에 존재하는 모호한 경계를 탐구한다. ‘사람과 사람 사이’, ‘생각과 감정 사이’, ‘나와 나 사이’를 거닐며, 길을 잃는 경험을 화면 위에 옮긴다. 이 길 잃음은 단절이 아니라, 나를 다시 움직이게 하고, 때로는 자유롭게 하는 연습이 된다.

나의 작업은 명확한 답을 제시하지 않는다. 대신 관객이 화면 속에서 각자의 질문을 발견하고, 잠시 멈추어 사유하는 시간을 갖기를 바란다.

I have always continued my work within the question, “How should I live?” In moments of stillness, countless thoughts drift through my mind—some linger and pull me inward, others pass without leaving a trace. These thoughts often shift forms: sometimes becoming feelings like fear or honesty, other times turning into questions about human relationships or the essence beyond appearances.

Painting is my way of emptying myself from this complex current. In the quiet concentration before the canvas, my thoughts grow still, replaced by colors and forms that carry my questions instead. The figures in my paintings are often absorbed in deep thought or fully immersed in a single act, free from external distraction. They may be myself, or someone I once crossed paths with.

Through my work, I explore the inner landscapes of human beings, the nature of relationships, and the ambiguous spaces between them—between people, between thoughts and feelings, between myself and myself. I wander through these in-between spaces, translating the experience of being lost into imagery. This “getting lost” is not a rupture, but a practice that keeps me moving, and sometimes, sets me free.

My paintings do not aim to offer clear answers. Instead, I hope they invite viewers to find their own questions within the work, to pause, and to enter a space of contemplation.

고스, 민경희, 유하연 작가의 3인전 ‘𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹,’
동시대를 사유하는 세 작가가 그려낸 각기다른 장면들을 만나보세요.

𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹,

유하연 작가는 이번 개인전 〈Walking the In-Between: 사이를 걷는 나〉에서 우리 모두가 한 번쯤 겪는 감정의 모순과 관계의 경계에 대해 이야기합니다. 고립과 자유, 연결과 단절, 확신과 불안 사이를 오가며 작가는 스스로에게 끊임없이 질문을 던지고, 그 여정에서 느낀 감정들을 작품으로 담아냈습니다.  작가는 이런 과정을 ‘사이걷기’라고 부릅니다. '사이걷기'는 단순히 어딘가를 향해 가는 것이 아니라, 자기 자신을 찾아가는 여정이자 멈추지 않기 위한 작은 움직임입니다. 명확하지 않은 목표와 관계들 속에서 작가는 다양한 시도를 통해 자기만의 감각을 찾아가고 있습니다. 



이번 전시는 그 여정 중 한 장면으로, 완성된 답을 주기보다는 관람객 각자가 자신의 이야기를 떠올릴 수 있도록 여백을 남깁니다. 작품을 따라가다 보면, 나도 모르게 마음 한켠에 머물던 감정들이 떠오를지도 모릅니다. 작가가 ‘사이’를 걷고 있듯, 우리 역시 그 어딘가를 함께 지나고 있다는 걸 느끼게 될 거예요.





In her solo exhibition 〈Walking the In-Between: 사이를 걷는 나〉, artist U Ha Yeon explores the contradictions of emotion and the boundaries within relationships—experiences we all encounter at some point. Moving between isolation and freedom, connection and disconnection, certainty and anxiety, she continually asks herself questions, translating the fragments of emotion she encounters along the way into her work. She calls this process “Walking the In-Between.” It’s not simply about going somewhere—it’s a journey to find herself, and a small but steady act of not standing still. Amid unclear goals and undefined relationships, she navigates through various trials and contradictions, slowly discovering her own sense of self. 



This exhibition captures a moment from that journey. Rather than offering a definitive answer, it leaves room for viewers to reflect on their own stories. As you move through the works, you may find yourself reconnecting with long-held emotions, quietly resurfacing. Just as the artist walks the in-between, you might realize that you’re also walking your own path in between.





[전시 에필로그 - 사이, 그 너머로 걷는 이야기]

어느 날, 길이 나를 불렀다. 
분명 어딘가로 향하고 있었지만, 그 어디도 확정된 목적지는 아니었다. 
나는 걷고 있었다. 멈추지 않기 위해서. 멈추면 내가 사라질 것 같았기 때문이다. 



길 위에서 나는 혼자였다. 
혼자는 자유로웠고, 동시에 조금 고립되고 외로웠다. 
그렇지만 그 외로움 속에서 나는 오히려 내 안의 목소리를 더 뚜렷이 들을 수 있었다. 



때로는 구불구불, 때로는 똑바른 길을 걸었다. 
무엇이 맞는지 틀린지 알 수 없었지만, 
이것도 해보고 저것도 해보며 
나는 모순되는 것들 사이를 걷는 법을 배웠다. 



누군가와 함께일 때는 또 다른 풍경이 펼쳐졌다. 
연결되어 있지만, 같은 존재는 아닌. 
너와 나 사이에서 균형을 맞추려 애쓰는 순간들 속에서 
나는 또 다른 나를 발견했다. 



나는 완전해지고 싶었다. 
조각난 나의 마음들을 모아 하나의 온전한 나로 서고 싶었다. 
그 여정의 끝에는 자유가 있을 것 같았다. 
키키 스미스의 자유낙하처럼, 
두려움과 해방이 동시에 존재하는 그 무중력의 순간 말이다. 



이 전시는, 그런 길 위의 한 장면이다. 
모호함 속에서 흔들리는 이 시대의 우리가
어쩌면 같은 길 위 어딘가를 걷고 있을지 모른다는 작은 믿음, 
그 공감의 시작점이 되기를 바란다. 



 나는 지금도 그 사이를 걷고 있다. 
자유와 고립 사이, 확신과 모호함 사이, 
그리고 나와 너 사이. 



그 모든 ‘사이’를 걸으며, 나는 나를 찾는다. 
그 여정의 조각들을 이제, 당신과 나눈다.
